Conference Update
The
Second Armenia Diaspora Conference, scheduled to take place in Yerevan,
on May 27-28, will consist of two plenary sessions, and various break
out sessions. All together, some 100 Diaspora and Armenia specialists
and officials will appear on the nearly two dozen panels on various
aspects of Armenia-Diaspora relations. Approximately 1,000 participants
are expected from approximately 50 countries.
"The challenge is to try to address the key topics which are of special
relevance to Armenia-Diaspora relations, without turning the Conference
into a very general talk session that produces no specific outcome,"
said Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian, who is heading the Conference
Planning Commission. "It is very important that we focus on areas where
joint efforts can be efficiently utilized for optimal results. We will
also concentrate on topics which are of mutual interest to Armenia and
the Diaspora."
As a result, individuals from the ministries of Trade, Culture,
Education, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are working with
various experts and heads of organizations to finalize the specific
panel topics. Presenters will be asked to make their papers available
prior to the Conference in order to allow for translation and
preparation of document packets for participants, and on the web for
those who are not able to attend. "We are working hard to make this the
opportunity to engage the many experts in the Diaspora who have been
looking for ways to become involved in Armenia's development. This
Conference is a step in the effort to broaden the involved Diaspora base
and to engage not just the traditional leadership, but also new forces."
In addition to the two day conference, a series of special activities,
meetings and tours is being planned by a volunteer group of Diasporans
who live in Armenia in order to give Conference participants and their
guests an unusual insider's look at life, business and culture in
Yerevan.
The opening and closing plenary sessions of the Conference will take
place at the Demirjian Culture and Sports Complex near the
Tsitsernakaberd Genocide Monument. The break out sessions will be held
at the Government Reception House, near the Matenadaran. Buses will
shuttle participants to and from meeting sites. Simultaneous
interpretation will be available. |

Announcing the Second
ArmeniaDiaspora Conference
Yerevan, January 8--The
second Armenia-Diaspora Conference is being convened in Yerevan, May 27-28
for the purpose of further developing and deepening Armenia - Diaspora
cooperation. The agenda will focus on those key issues which affect all
Armenians, and specific programs to address them.
The purpose of this second Conference is to examine together those issues
which our nation faces given the current historic, geopolitical realities,
to summarize and analyze what has been accomplished, and to outline the
practical steps and joint actions necessary to address these issues of
pan-Armenian concern.
It is important to note that where the first Armenia - Diaspora Conference
focused on the creation of an environment of cooperation and good will, the
second Armenia-Diaspora conference will be practical, focusing on
specialized areas. The conference will explore concrete programs in
different arenas, and appropriate mechanisms will be created for their
implementation.
If the Diaspora delegations present at the
first Conference were very narrowly representative, the second Conference
will include representation of all Diaspora institutions while making it
possible to include broader representation and participation in the
conference.
In the months to come, there will be a series of consultations and meetings
in various Diaspora communities, with the participation of representatives
of our lay and religious organizations, as well as individuals. Necessary
preparatory meetings will also take place in Armenia.
We are convinced that the second Conference will play a significant role in
deepening cooperation and bringing together our national potential for the
purpose of resolving the national issues which confront us in order to
achieve Armenians' security, progress and prosperity.
The
second Armenia - Diaspora conference
will be held to continue in the direction set
by the first such conclave two years ago.
At that meeting, Armenians from Armenia
and Diaspora, the leadership of the state together with the leadership of
Diaspora communities, agreed to work together to solve common issues and
meet common goals.
The second Armenia
Diaspora conference expects to deal with specific project - oriented topics,
convene several small meetings on various aspects of Armenia - Diaspora
cooperation, and seek the advice, counsel and
participation of professionals in
each field.
The conference invites all those
interested in concrete areas of cooperation, as well as community and
organization leaders, to plan to attend the conference in Yerevan, during
Armenia's celebration of a decade of independence.
