Armenia Comes Second at Junior EuroVision SOng Contest

Yerevan, December 10, 2007, Armenpress: Armenia has scored the second highest average of points of a runner-up with 8.50 at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2007 in Rotterdam, Netherlands Saturday, which saw Belarus winning for the second time with Alexey Zhigalkovich and his song S druzyami.

Armenia is also the most successful debuting country ever reaching second place The other debutants Georgia and Bulgaria also did quite well finishing fourth and seventh respectively while Lithuania finished only 13th.

Serj Tankian to release his first solo album "Elect the Dead"
October 17 /PanARMENIAN.Net/ Serj Tankian, lead singer for System of a Down, may be one of the most politically active figures in music - a member of Amnesty International, an advocate of free speech, a vocal critic of the current administration - but even he can get tired of democracy. "With System, it's a process where four people have to agree on what songs to use," Tankian said, explaining his decision to release his first solo album. "When you're doing it by yourself, all the decisions come and go with you."

Yerevan To Have Soon Its First Skateboard Park
Yerevan, October 15, Armenpress: The first ever skateboard park, built in Yerevan's Nor Nork district, will be put into operation in a few days, head of a municipality department in charge of construction and redevelopment, said today. He said the government released 145 million Drams to build the park on 1,200 square meters of land. The official, Frunze Basentsian, said visitors may bring their skates or rent skates at the park. He said the park will have a permanently stationed medic, sanitary facilities and instructors.

Asilva to have second exhibition of paintings in Yerevan
Yerevan, September 3, ARMENPRESS: A prominent French-Armenian painter Asilva will have the second exhibition of her works in Armenia. It will open on September 12 at the National Picture Gallery.
Ms. Asilva has called her second display that will feature over 40 paintings on paper "An Exhibition with Mirrors." The National Picture Gallery has published an illustrated album of her works in three languages- Armenian, French and English.
Her first exhibition was held here three years ago and was visited by thousands of art lovers and some foreign diplomats.

French Embassy In Armenia To Hold Open-Air Music Festival
Yerevan, June 12, Armenpress: On June 21 residents of Yerevan and guests will have a rare opportunity to enjoy live music of different styles without having to buy tickets as it will be played for all music lovers on several downtown streets from 6 in the evening until late at night. This unprecedented music festival is the initiative of the French Embassy in Yerevan. It will be supported by Armenian culture ministry and Yerevan municipality. Julie Soren, a cultural attaché at the French Embassy, said to today's news conference that this festival was founded 26 years ago by a group of the French who decided to dedicate one day of a year to music. The festival soon expanded from France to other countries.

The Shadows Of Forgotten Ancestors
May 26, /Azg/ By Hasmik Harountiunian Every Wednesday, the Narekatsi Art Center organizes discussions and film sessions. Arevik Avanesian, curators of the event, states that such film sessions help represent the art of cinema and talented film-directors to the youth. "Thanks to such programs, the youth watches and likes the films by not only outstanding Armenian film-directors, but also those shot by the foreign ones. We also frequently represent the films by young film-makers," she emphasized. On May 23 a regular film session took place. The organizers represented "The Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors," one of the greatest and the most famous films by the outstanding Armenian film-director Sergey Parajanov. Zaven Sargsian, head of the Parajanov home museum, stated that the film became one of the most important ones for its author Sergey Parajanov.

Eurovision 2007 Semi-Final kicks off in Helsinki today
May 10, 2007, /PanARMENIAN.Net/ Eurovision 2007 Semi-Final will kick off in Helsinki today. Initiators say 120-million audience will watch the live contest. A record breaking 42 countries take part in the 52nd Eurovision Song Contest. This year, the Eurovision Song Contest family welcomes Czech Republic and Georgia as new participating members, as well as returning countries Austria and Hungary.

The Final of the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest will take place on May 12, 2007, under the theme True Fantasy. The top-10 of the Semi-Final will take part, as well as last year's top-10 and the so-called 'Big Four' (France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom).

Armenian Documentary Wins Tribeca Film Festival Prize
New York, May 4, Armenpress: A Story of People in War & Peace, directed by Armenian film director Vartan Hovhanesian, was recognized the winner of the 6th annual Tribeca Film Festival in New York in the category of Best New Documentary Filmmaker. The film is about the horrors of war and its effects that uses footage from the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh.

The Winner received $25,000 cash and the art award "Nelson Mandela, Johannesburg, South Africa," created by Bruce Weber.

String Quartet After Komitas To Participate In International Music Festival To Take Place In France
Yerevan, April 19, Noyan Tapan. "The string quartet after Komitas was not involved in the events being held within the framework of the Year of Armenia to France, whereas both performance level and history of the quartet give right to participate in those events." Artistic head of the quartet, professor Eduard Tadevosian expressed this confidence in the interview to the Noyan Tapan correspondent. In his words, he has never addressed and will not address with that issue to the organizers as the dignity does not allow: "It is a state program, if they find proper they send, if not, then we are not of their taste."

Four Armenian Films To Be Shown At Siracusa International Film Festival
Yerevan, April 17, Noyan Tapan. Films of four Armenian directors will be shown on April 17-23 at the Siracusa International Festival in New York. The Noyan Tapan correspondent was informed about it by the office of the "Golden Apricot" (Voske Tsiran) international film festival. Levon Grigorian's "Memories about Sayat Nova," Haroutiun Khachatrian's "Poet's Return," French Armenian director Robert Gedikian's "Return to Armenia" films and young director Artur Mikayelian's "The Unemployed" animation film to be presented in Siracusa participated in the "Armenian Panorama" competition program of the "Golden Apricot" international film festival in 2006.

George Pompidou Center Hosts Arshile Gorky Exhibition
Paris, April 2, Armenpress: An exhibition of paintings by famous American Armenian artist Arshile Gorky has opened today in George Pompidou Center in Paris. The exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Lisbon-based Gyulbenkian Foundation and displays the painters works which he created in 1940-s.

The exhibition is part of an extensive range of events, known as The Year of Armenia in France. The opening was attended by the French coordinator of the events, the Armenian ambassador to France and also an acclaimed glass designer Alain Mkrtchian (Alain Mikri).

Arame Picture Gallery To Showcase Taron Muradian's Works At ArtExpo
Yerevan, March 26, Armenpress: A private picture gallery in Yerevan, Arame, will showcase several paintings of a local artist Taron Muradian at ArtExpo exhibitions to take place successively in Denmark and Holland in April.

Concerts Of Armenian State Philharmonic Orchestra Pass In Crowded Halls In France

As Edvard Topchian, Orchestra's Art Director and conductor, reported at the February 28 press conference, in spite of the Orchestra's busy concert schedule, the musicians performed excellently presenting themselves to the foreign spectator as high-class professionals.

Hayko With 'Anytime You Need' To Represent Armenia at Eurovision 2007
Yerevan, Feb. 26, 2007 /Armenpress/ A jury has selected singer Hayko to represent Armenia at 2007 Eurovision song contest in Finland. The national final held on February 25 recognized his 'Anytime You Need' as the best of six other contenders. Hayko has won also the sympathies of televotes, though the final say belonged to the jury.
Hayko was chosen out of twenty singers who competed in two semi finals, on February 23 and 24. The best three from each competed at the Armenian national final on February 25.

Armenia Chooses Singer for Eurovision Song Contest
Yerevan, Feb. 23, 2007 /Armenpress/ The second representative of Armenia for the Eurovision Song Contest will be chosen on February 25th. Twenty singers will compete in two semi finals, on February 23 and 24 and the best three from each will compete at the Armenian national final.

Proceeds Form Aznavour Concert To Cover Unprecedented Visit

List of Events Within Year of Armenia in France Enlarged Due to High Interest
Yerevan, February 16, 2007 /PanARMENIAN.Net/ The events scheduled in the framework of the Year of Armenia in France are held successfully and at a high level, RA President's assistant, coordinator of the Year of Armenia in France Vigen Sargsyan said. "The program is rich but the list of events was enlarged from 500 to 600 due to high interest," he said. Exhibitions of Parajanov and Saryan's works as well as those dedicated to architectural heritage of Armenia's 12 capitals have already opened and draw great popular attention. "The exhibits of the State Museum of Ethnography of Armenia in Sardarapat also aroused big interest just as like the exhibition of universally known painter of sea-scapes of Armenian origin Ivan Ayvazovsky hosted by the Navy Museum in Paris," Sargsyan said. In a statement disseminated to media the ministry said Charnock, who performed twice at a Yerevan theater, could hardly be regarded as 'a British national treasure,' claimed by media in UK. Premieres Of Tigran Mansurian's Two Works To Take Place In January In Sweden And New York
Yerevan, December 22, Noyan Tapan. Violin Concert N 2 of composer Tigran Mansurian, RA People's Artist, professor of Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory, will be performed for the first time by Chamber Orchestra of Sweden in January 2007 in Stockholm. Then the Armenian composer's work will be also presented to music-lovers of three Swedish cities.

As T.Mansurian said in his interview to NT correspondent, the concert was written by the order of Canadian Armenian violinist Levon Chilingarian. In his words, an agreement has been reached with the violinist, according to which he will also perform this concert in Armenia next year.

Choir Of Armenian Philanthropic Academy Is Best Choir Of Year In Calcutta
Calcutta, December 20, Noyan Tapan - Armenians Today. As a result of the competition taken place on December 16 among choirs of about 10 Christian schools in Calcutta, the Armenian Philanthropic Academy was recognized the best choir of the year and was awarded the honourary first prize.

Yerevan, December 18, A1plus.am: A competition of Christmas spiritual songs took place in St. Mary catholic church in Calcutta. The choirs of about 10 schools participated in it. The choir of the Armenian Humanitarian Lyceum, conducted by Vachagan Tadevosyan also participated in the competition.
The competition started with «Our Father» after which each choir performed two songs in English.

Armenian Teen Wins Global Talent Search
Yerevan, December 11, Armenpress; A 17-year-girl from Armenia, Silva Hakobian, has won a contest to find the hottest new musical talent in the world. Silva Hakobian won the BBC World Service's Next Big Thing competition, beating six other acts in a final in London.

Second place in the competition was split between a rapper called NiC from Malawi and London duo Stefan and Mya. The judges said Silva's song I Like, which was written by her brother, was "fresh and new" and described her performance as "second to none".
