Armenian film, as a genre, was supported by the Soviet Union, as
were all the arts. At one point, HaiFilm studios had a staff of
1100 and was able to produce four feature films a year, together
with 2 short subjects.
After a decade when the state budget could not provide funds for
even one full-length feature film, today HaiFilm studio, the state
film agency, is able to fund one full-length feature film. The rest
of today's productions are coproductions with foreign entities.
But even as film budgets are cut, there are more than two dozen
graduates in film direction each year. As a result, what the film
studios can't afford to keep, the television industry benefits from.
The government, in addition, to beginning to provide a small production
budget each year, is also developing a policy on film preservation
and promotion.
Here, we provide the list of all full-length feature films with
Armenian directors. Most have been produced in Soviet Armenia, or
the Republic of Armenia. A few are foreign productions, with Armenian
directors.
