PanARMENIAN.Net, October 28, 2000: Two
resolutions on the Genocide of Armenians were submitted for consideration
on October 27 to the Italian Parliament, Turkish Daily News informs. The
first resolution, submitted by Deputy Giancarlo Paliarini, calls the Italian
Parliament to recognize the Genocide of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey in
1915-1923. Presenting the resolution in the Italian parliament, Paliarini
declared: "Ankara does it's best not to allow the discussion of this
resolution, speaking with threats to stop the economic and trade relations
with Italy in case of adoption of the resolution by the parliament of
the country". The author of the second resolution, Deputy Sandra
Fey, suggests opening all the archives and aiming the scientists' efforts
at the establishment of the fact of the genocide. "We are parliamentarians
and not historians, and we cannot give our assessments to historical events",
stated deputy Fey. She added at the same time that when submitting this
document she was supposedly "threatened and subjected to censure
on the part of Armenians residing in Italy". The discussion, and
probably the voting on both the resolutions as well, will be held in the
Italian parliament on November 7. It should be noted that the members
of the French Senate, representing the Communist and Socialist Party,
also declared of their intention to enter a resolution about recognizing
the Genocide of Armenians in the agenda of the French Senate likewise
on November 7.
