Sojourn at Ararat originally premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1986 to rave reviews including The Scotsman. Since then it has toured on four continents in over 25 cities worldwide, receiving accolades and awards for both its English and French. The Joe's Pub performance will be a rare reunion of Armani and Papasian in their original roles.
The show evokes identity, homeland and love while illuminating the soul of the Armenian people through its literature and legends. The Armenian people are personified as a man and a woman, played by Papasian and Armani. In this ode to life the absurdity of conflict and war is depicted with scathingly humorous moments of sublime literature, while the horrors of the 1915 Armenian Genocide are evoked with vivid imagery and haunting music and songs.
Sojourn at Ararat was Pick of the Week in LA Weekly and received eight Drama Logue Critics' Awards in 1988 and 1989 in addition to accolades in The Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly, to name a few. It also received multiple awards in Armenia in 1991. The performance at Joe’s Pub will be the first time it is seen in New York.
