February General Secretary of the U.S.S.R. Communist Party Mikhail Gorbachev promises to review the status of Karabagh, but he is slow to act and support wanes for any changes in boundaries.
February 11 Commencement of mass demonstrations in the Nagorno Karabagh Autonomous Oblast (N.KA.O.) demanding unification with Armenian S.S.R.
February 20 The Parliament of Nagorno Karabagh votes to separate from Azerbaijan S.S.R. and join Armenian S.S.R., citing the Soviet Constitution on the right to self-determination.
February 26 One million people demonstrate in Yerevan's Opera Square.
February 28 Armenians killed in pogroms in Sumgait, Azerbaijan.
March 28 The U.S.S.R. Supreme Soviet ignores unification demands and recommends a socioeconomic and educational-cultural reform program for Karabagh.
July 12 The Nagorno Karabagh Supreme Soviet takes the decision to secede from Azerbaijan and adopts measures to legally become part of Armenia.
November Deportation of 260,000 Armenians from Azerbaijan, and 200,000 Azerbaijanis from Armenia.
December Disastrous earthquake in northern Armenia heavily damages Leninakan (now Gyumri).
