January N.K.R. Foreign Minister Arkady Ghukasian rejects any proposal that would allow Turkey to provide troops to join an O.S.C.E. peacekeeping force.
January  13 The Supreme Court announces a six-month suspension of the A.R.F. on charges of drug trafficking and political terrorism through a clandestine organization called "Dro
February Tripartite talks begin in Moscow, aimed at reinforcement of the cease-fire in Karabagh and setting the stage for determining the enclaves political future. The talks endorse N.K.R. government participation.
March Azerbaijani shelling of villages on Armenia's northeastern and eastern borders precedes an Azeri ground attack inside Armenia.
April 4 Catholicos Karekin II, of the See of Cilicia, is elected the 131st Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church, in Echmiadsin, and renamed Karekin I. (This marks the first election of a Catholicos of All Armenians in more than 600 years to take place in an independent Armenian state.)
April 24 The 80th anniversary of the 1915 Armenian Genocide is officially commemorated in Armenia.
April 30 Seventy percent of the N.K.R. electorate turn out at the polls to elect 24 of the 31 members of Karabagh's Parliament, renamed the National Assembly.
May Prime Minister Hrant Bagratian signs a comprehensive agreement with Iran that foresees the construction of a gas pipeline to Armenia and the extension of an electric power grid to supply electricity.
June The prosecutor general of Armenia, Artavasd Gevorgian, signs indictments against eleven Dro defendants, and forwards their cases to the Supreme Court.
June 23 Karen Baburian is elected chairman of the N.K.R.National Assembly.
July A special committee is established to draft a constitution for N.K.R.
July  7 The Constitution of the Republic of Armenia is adopted
July 13 The six-month suspension of A.R.F. activities in Armenia expires. The party is accused of failing to meet conditions for reinstatement, and the ban is extended.
July 24 Representatives from Nagorno Karabagh, Armenia and Azerbaijan meet in Baden, Austria, under the chairmanship of the O.S.C.E. to continue negotiations.
September Shelling across Armenian-Azeri northeastern border intensifies
October 27 The first block of the Medzamor nuclear power plant is reactivated after an eight-year hiatus that followed a 1988 referendum to close it for safety reasons. Extensive repairs and measures are taken to upgrade the safety of the facility.
September 4-8 O.S.C.E. negotiations for a settlement to the Karabagh conflict take place near Moscow.
October 9 Closed-door sessions involving Armenia, Azerbaijan and N.K.R. begin at a Finnish port city in the Aaland Islands with hopes of finding a solution.
November 4 A scheduled week-long series of meetings seeking progress on a comprehensive political agreement on Karabagh resume in Moscow, with the Lachin Corridor issue remaining deadlocked.
December The government in Stepanakert issues an optimistic report on the economy of N.K.R., announcing a 19.2% decrease in its 1995 budget deficit. Also reported is the renovation of all 1,115 buildings that were destroyed or damaged as a result of the war and the construction of an additional 160 buildings.
