Kocharian Visits Iran, Discusses Closer Ties

President Mahmud Ahmadinejad (L) meets with former Armenian President Robert Kocharian in TehranRFE/RL -- Former President Robert Kocharian has visited Iran and reaffirmed Armenia’s commitment to further deepen relations with the Islamic Republic, it emerged on Thursday.

Kocharian met with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki in Tehran during the two-day trip that marked his first major political engagement since resignation.

The official Iranian IRNA news agency cited Ahmadinejad as calling the Armenian-Iranian relationship “very friendly” and saying that the two neighboring countries are “determined to implement joint projects and play an active role in regional developments.”

Ahmadinejad said those developments are favoring “independent and justice-seeking nations around the globe.” “Those who have always masterminded plots against us are become very weak and the powerful states and their justice-seeking nations are on the right track, determined to broaden level of relations and cooperation with one another,” he told Kocharian on Thursday.

“The visiting former Armenian president, for his part, said that his country is to broaden all-out relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran and underscored that the two sides enjoy ample untapped capacities to increase current level of mutual and regional relations and cooperation,” reported IRNA.

Kocharian was reported to give similar assurances to Mottaki on Wednesday. According to “The Tehran Times” daily, he also criticized “foreign powers’ prescriptions for resolving crises in the Caucasus region.” The paper did not elaborate

Kocharian’s office in Yerevan said it will release details of the talks in the coming days. Victor Soghomonian, a spokesman for the ex-president, told RFE/RL that the visit was the result of a “state invitation” extended by the Iranian leadership.

It was not immediately clear if Kocharian acted in a purely personal capacity or carried messages to Tehran from his successor and longtime ally, Serzh Sarkisian. Kocharian has kept a low profile in Armenia since completing his second and final term in office in April 2008.

Kocharian presided over a deepening of Armenia’s economic cooperation with Iran, mainly focusing on energy, throughout his decade-long rule. He and Ahmadinejad inaugurated in March 2007 the first Armenian section of a natural gas pipeline connecting the two nations. The ex-president was also present at the official launch of the pipeline’s final section in December 2008.

Armenia began importing Iranian gas in May 2009, one month after Sarkisian’s official visit to Tehran during which the two governments reaffirmed plans to implement more joint energy projects. Those include the construction of a big hydro-electric plant on the Arax river marking the Armenian-Iranian border and a third high-voltage transmission line connecting the two countries’ power grids.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei welcomed the “expansion of amicable ties with the Armenian nation and government” during talks with Sarkisian.

Sounds to me, like his visit was a success. The gas pipeline was big, and we must credit him for that. Economic cooperation with Iran is extremely important for Armenia. And, if former President Kocharian is the man, then let it be.

The man to do what????!!!! Screw up the country up to the point where there are no values left and no one believes in a better country? elections? justice? what is he exactly the man for???? I am not saying that others are better but in my opinion Kocharyan, the guy before him and the current gang are responsible for creating a corrupt and mafia system in Armenia, where people are don't give a damn about the future of the country and are cynics to the core of their beings.

This guy ruined any positive prospect of the country for his own power, and then at the end, made a decision to assist in the election of a worthless and vision lacking person as president. And then we are surprised why on earth they are screwing up on every possible direction.

My question to you is can you imagine any other administration that would fail in such a short period of time on so many levels?

Only Mariamjon is honest in above posts...
the other two seem to be forgetting that all the world is corrupt!!!there is corruption everywhere...
what he -Kocharyan- has achieved in relation with Iran, is superb. Those two like 'Jaylam"s have their heads in the sand and think Armenia shoud be a country of Angels..
Go grind your oxydated axes elsewhere...
Armenia is forging ahead, albeit at a slow pace, but then what with those two other turkic nations day in day out drectly indirectly sniping at RA..would you expect.Iran is the only next neighbour that has done its best for RA.An oil rich country, gas rich country Iran unlike the other two ,though a steadfast good islamic Nation/State does not ever even utter a word that is unfriendly towards Armenia.Quite the opposite.Let the the other two die of envy!!!!!!!

What kocharyan achieved domestically is a boneless political structure with no values or vision, the relations with Iran and the success is mostly the result of good will toward Armenia in Iran, believe me has nothing to do with Kocharyan or his administration.

Yes the world is corrupt, but what he achieved in Armenia is a society where no one cares about the future and thinks long term. What is he doing now with trips like that is sort of scary, cause Armenia is no Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan where you can rule several terms it tow terms - that's it!!! I think this is his attempt to check the pulse and understand weather he can come back in 2013.

And that is a major issue. This is no Africa, even after their deliberate efforts to screw this country!

So what, let him come back. He has been a good president and he has stabilized the country from what it was. Please, understand magic will not happen in one day in a country where when Kocharyan came to power was ruled by small thiefdoms. Realize that he has strengthened the country, not forgetting all the fedayis that gave their life for a just cause in Arcax. You have to realize also that this man is the strogest in political arena with his will and conncetions, and also experience , strong leader that every turk hates.
