genocide posterNewAlliance.info -- Georgia’s Armenian community addressed the President of Georgia and the Georgian Parliament, asking to consider the issue of officially recognizing the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire.

According to the community’s press release, letters with the request of drafting the law of this issue were sent to the head of state, and also to the parliament’s chairmen and the parliamentary fractions, as well as to the Armenian deputies of Georgian parliament. Armenian organizations asked the MPs to make a claim during the parliamentary session before April 24,and to urge the Georgian Parliament to honour the memory of the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923.

The appeal was initiated by NGO’s: The Armenian Community of Georgia, The Armenian Cooperation Centre of Georgia, Association of Armenian Students of Georgia.

24 April of this year is a landmark date of 95 years since the first genocide of the XX century – the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire of 1915-1923 – was launched. As a result of the genocide over two million Armenians were killed on their historic homeland. Genocide is classified by the UN as a crime against humanity, therefore limitation period is not applied to it.

As it stands, over 20 states officially recognized the Armenian Genocide, along with the international organizations, such as the European Union and the Council of Europe. Also, today the issue of the official recognition of the Genocide is discussed in numerous countries, e.g. USA, Israel, Spain, Bulgaria, Serbia, et al.
