Birth rate in Armenia grows 1% in 2010
Tert.Am Birth rate in Armenia grew only 1% in 2010, according to Karine Kuyumjyan, the head of the Census and Demography Division at the National Statistical Service.
Speaking at a news conference on Monday, she said child birth record is down compared to 2009 when birth rate had increased by 7.8% in comparison with the previous year.
She said 44,810 babies were born in the country, with 20,904 being girls.
Speaking further on the issue, sociologist Aharon Adibekyan added that birth rate in Armenia is very low, while the society is growing older.
"The average birth rate on the global scale is 20 newborn babies per 1,000 inhabitants. That means, five children per 3-5 women is considered a normal rate, whereas in Armenia three women give birth to two children. Because our future mothers have grown older by three years and future fathers - by seven years, there is very little likelihood for such couples to have many children," he said.
