237 died of HIV/AIDS in Armenia since 1988

aidsTertAm Since 1988, 237 individuals have died of AIDS in Armenia, according to the National Centre for AIDS Prevention.

So far, 40 women and five children have been reported dead.

In January-February 2010, 19 new cases have been diagnosed, the head of the center, Arshak Papoyan, told Tert.am.

He said, out of total number of 990 patients registered in the country, 148 were diagnosed with HIV virus in 2010.

Some 56.4% of HIV patients are people aged between 25 and 39. Most of them have been infected heterosexually (51.6%); others have reportedly acquired the disease through intravenous injections (39.5%). There have also been cases of mother-to-child transmission.

 

Out of the 486 HIV patients (111 women and 10 children) were diagnosed with AIDS.

Most of the patients – 412 people (4,,6%-) - were from Yerevan. The second largest city of Gyumri, with 11.3% of cases, is in the second place.

The HIV/AIDS situation analysis in Armenia has revealed 1,900 HIV-positive individuals in the country.
