Genocide And Holocaust Remembrance Day To Be Held In Times Square
QGazette Thousands of Armenians, Jews and their supporters will gather in Times Square at 43rd Street and Broadway to commemorate the first genocide of the 20th Century, the Armenian Genocide (Medz Yeghern) and Yom HaShoah Holocaust at a special day of remembrance.
The gathering will take place from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 1 and will pay tribute to the 1.5 million Armenians who were massacred by the Young Turk Government of the Ottoman Empire, and to the six million Jews who were annihilated by the Nazis.
The theme of the 96th Armenian Genocide Commemoration is entitled, Turkey is Guilty of Genocide: Denying the Undeniable is a Crime. Dennis R. Papazian, Ph.D., national grand commander of Knights of Vartan and founding director of the Armenian Research Center at the University of Michigan- Dearborn and Mary A. Papazian, Ph.D., provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs at Lehman College will be presiding over the ceremonies. Dr. Richard G. Hovannisian, Guggenheim Fellow and professor of Armenian and Near Eastern History at U.C.L.A. will be the keynote speaker.
Other presenters will include civic, religious, humanitarian, educational and cultural leaders as well as performing artists.
