Turkey, Georgia introduce passport-free travel

turkey-georgiaTertAm Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan are expected to attend an opening ceremony Tuesday for the modernized Sarp customs point to mark the passport-free travel agreement between the neighboring countries.

After lifting their visa requirements in 2009, Georgia and Turkey will now allow their citizens to travel to each other’s country with only their state identity cards.

Nearly 2 million people traveled between Turkey and Georgia in 2010.

Implementing a passport-free travel regime via the Sarp border gate will also ease traffic at the gate, the main crossing point between the two neighbors, through which almost 90 percent of road transport between the two countries passes.

The Turkish prime minister is expected to hold talks in Georgia after attending the official ceremony at the border gate, local media reported.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu announced the passport-free agreement during an electoral campaign meeting Thursday, underscoring the good relations between the two countries.
