The Lori province was formed in 1996 and includes six former administrative regions: Vanadzor, Stepanavan, Tashir, Googark, Tumanian and  Spitak. The province has a  total area of 3,789 sq. miles and population of 466,200 (118,580 rural and 266,420 urban residents).  It is 1,353m above sea level. It shares a border with Georgia on the north.

Vanadzor is the administrative center of the province. It has a population of 172,500.

Primary Economic Drivers:

Lori  is one of the economically developed provinces of the Republic of Armenia. Its industrious production comprises 5,4% of the total production volume of the Republic. According to the statistical data of January 1/2000, 3,550 economical entities have been registered of which 3000 are small and medium enterprises and 3,300 belong to private entrepreneurship.

There are many branches in regional manufacture of which mountainous metallurgy, chemical, machine building, light and food industries are developed. Production of these branches is demanded both in home market and in more than 20 countries of the world. The province is rich in mineral resources (copper, gold, zinc), building-decorative minerals (granite, basalt, tuff) and mineral waters. Mountainous metallurgy and chemical industry are supposed to have considerable growth within the next few years.

The production of melamine through ceaseless method was first invented in the world and installed in Vanadzor Chemical Plant. The city of Vanadzor also has other large enterprises such as the factories "Avtogenmash" and "Avtomatika"- manufactures of chemical fibers, precision machines, furniture, hosiery.  

The Vanadzor "Polymer-glue" Scientific Research Institute has developed new types of glues that are widely used in various spheres of industry and national economy. One of the pioneers of the contemporary science is "Avtomatika" Scientific Research Institute, which is in close scientific and technical cooperation with many research institutions and plants of the country. The systems worked out by the Institute are successfully used in 30 foreign countries. 

The town of Alaverdi is the center of the copper-molybdenum industry of Armenia. The Alaverdi Mining Factory is known to be the biggest factory of raw-materials mining and cooper molding.


The geographical location of Lori is considered favorable for the development of  International Transportation. The Tbilisi-Yerevan railway as well as two main roads leading to Georgia cross the territory of the province. In general the latter possesses good network of highways with the total length of 913 km, 213 km of which are republican. 

There are state road connections to Yerevan and other southern regions of Armenia. Also there is a convenient road network connection with Moscow, Min Vodi, Doni Rostov and other regions of Russia and NIS countries. 

Stepanavan airport is located in Lori, providing Stepanavan-Krasnodar flights by AN-24 planes. The regional telecommunications are provided by "Armentel" Greek Company. Nearly all communities of the province have telephone connection. The number of telephones per 1000 people is 104. The well-developed infrastructure of the the province of Lori allows delivery of goods to the CIS countries.
