Yerevan School No 172

Yerevan school No 172 (No. 78 in the past) was built in 1960.
In 1967-68, it included English language specialization as part of its curriculum and became known for presenting plays in English. At the end of each year, a Golden Hands exhibition was held, featuring the students’ art work, and attended by famous artists. The items were even taken and exhibited in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Montreal. Since 1990-91, there has been a marionette theatre as well. The school was active in sports too. Many students were prizewinners in various competitions.

As the number of students increased, and financial resources didn’t, the school ran into a series of problems. In 1993, classes could no longer be held in the sports hall which was in an awful shape. All requests for help remained unanswered until benefactors Jirair Karapetian came forward last year. The hall was totally reconstructed in memory of his daughter.
On September 27, 2001, Jirair and Volga Karapetians were present at the official opening ceremony of the “Nairi-Karapetyan-Minasyan” sports hall.
The school is hoping other benefactors will come forward to help rebuild the school which continues to have an excellent reputation.
